Introduction

Love in Morse code takes 12 signals: 7 dots and 5 dashes. As a single word it has no word gap, which keeps it short enough for a ring band, a pendant or a small tattoo. Press Play sound above to hear its rhythm before you commit it to metal or ink, or see faith in Morse code for another keepsake message. For the full phrase with I and YOU, see I love you in Morse code.

Letter by letter

How many dots and dashes are in love?

Love has 12 signals, 7 dots and 5 dashes, spread across four letters.

Letter Code Said as Dots Dashes
L .-.. di-dah-di-dit 3 1
O --- dah-dah-dah 0 3
V ...- di-di-di-dah 3 1
E . dit 1 0
Total 7 5

With the gaps between letters included, the word runs 39 units. That works out to 4.68 seconds at 10 WPM and 2.34 seconds at 20 WPM.

How to say love in Morse code

You can send love by knock, light, sound or on paper, and all four use the same 12 signals.

  1. Knock or tap it: a quick knock for each dot, one about three times longer for each dash, and a short pause after every letter.
  2. Flash it: the Flash button blinks LOVE on screen; for a real torch, the Morse code light page drives a phone flashlight on browsers that support it.
  3. Play it: press Play sound, then pick WAV under More if you want to send the audio.
  4. Write it on a card: draw each dash about three dots long and leave the plain word off, so the reader has to decode it.

Four letters make LOVE an easy word to send by hand. The O in the middle is three long signals in a row, which gives the listener a clear landmark.

LOVE bead by bead

A LOVE bracelet takes 15 pieces: 7 round dot beads, 5 long dash beads and 3 spacers between the letters. Strand length depends on bead size; these estimates come from the Make it yours panel, measured against a 7 in wrist.

Bead size Strand length Cord left each side
4 mm 3.4 in (85 mm) 1.8 in
6 mm 5.0 in (128 mm) 1.0 in
8 mm 6.7 in (170 mm) 0.2 in

At 8 mm the word nearly fills the wrist and leaves little room for a clasp, so 6 mm is the comfortable middle. Allow extra cord for knots.

  1. Thread L: round, long, round, round, then a spacer.
  2. Add O as three long beads, then a spacer.
  3. Add V as three round beads and one long, then a spacer.
  4. End with a single round bead for E.
  5. Fill both sides with plain beads and tie off the cord.

For another wrist size or a longer word, the Morse code bracelet generator recalculates the layout.

On a ring, pendant or tattoo

Love suits small surfaces because it is only 12 marks with no word gap to place. On a ring, engrave it as one line and mark the starting end: read backward, the marks become . -... --- ..-., which spells EBOF.

On a pendant, keep the three dashes of the O the same length so the middle letter stays obvious. A tattoo needs the same discipline at a larger scale, with letter gaps clearly wider than the gaps inside a letter. The Morse code tattoo generator draws a stencil with that spacing fixed, so the artist works from exact marks.

Three mistakes that change the word

Each of these turns LOVE into letters nobody meant to write.

  • A gap inside the L: . -.. --- ...- . splits L into E and D and reads EDOVE.
  • V cut to U: ...- loses one dot and becomes ..-, so the piece reads LOUE.
  • L turned into F: move the dash in L from second to third place (..-.) and the word reads FOVE.

Before engraving or inking, type the design into the Morse code decoder. It should return LOVE and nothing else.
