Introduction

Stay in Morse code is ... - .- -.-- (S-T-A-Y). In International Morse, it has a single space between the letters. The word splits evenly into five dots and five dashes, which is why it looks balanced on a wristband or a line of ink. It opens on the three quick dots of S and ends on Y, the longest letter in the word.

Press Play above to hear it at 14 words per minute, switch to Flash to send it with the screen, or copy the pattern for a note or a chat.

Letter by letter

How STAY sounds: the spoken rhythm

To say stay in Morse code out loud, read each letter as dits and dahs: di-di-dit, dah, di-dah, dah-di-dah-dah. Operators voice a dot as "di" inside a letter and "dit" when it is the last signal, which is why S ends on "dit" and A does not.

Letter Pattern Spoken Signals
S ... di-di-dit 3 dots
T - dah 1 dash
A .- di-dah 1 dot, 1 dash
Y -.-- dah-di-dah-dah 1 dot, 3 dashes

Two of the letters, and a near neighbor of the third, are common on their own in operating use: S is the start of SOS, T is sometimes keyed for a cut zero in numeric groups, and K (which Y becomes when its final dash drops) is the invitation to transmit. Each letter above links to its own page with the sound and timing bar.

How long STAY takes to send

STAY runs for 35 timing units, so how long it lasts depends only on the speed you pick. Morse timing is a set of proportions: a dot is 1 unit, a dash is 3, the gap inside a letter is 1, and the gap between letters is 3. A word gap, which this single word never needs, is 7.

Speed Time for STAY Where you meet it
10 WPM 4.2 seconds slow practice, flashlight sending
14 WPM 3.0 seconds the default on this page
20 WPM 2.1 seconds typical on-air copying speed

Y alone takes 13 of the 35 units, more than a third of the word. If you count aloud while sending, give that last letter its full "dah-di-dah-dah" before you stop.

Sending STAY by sound, light or taps

Any on-off signal carries STAY as long as the proportions survive: a dash three times a dot, a letter break three times the gap inside a letter.

  1. Sound: press Play sound above, or save the WAV and send the file in a chat instead of typing the pattern.
  2. Screen or torch: press Flash, then Full screen; the page blinks the word, and Loop repeats it until you stop. For a phone torch, open the Morse code light tool.
  3. Hand torch: short blinks for dots, blinks about three times longer for dashes, darkness between letters. Send it twice if the receiver is more than a few meters away.
  4. Taps or knocks: one tap for a dot, a held or longer tap for a dash, a clear pause between letters. The Morse code tapper grades your spacing as you key it.
  5. Check: play your attempt into the decoder and confirm it reads STAY, not SKY or VAY (see the next section).

Whistles and horns follow the same rule with short and long notes, which is how "stay back" or "stay put" gets across a noisy site when a voice cannot.

Four ways STAY turns into another word

Most wrong copies of stay are spacing errors, not wrong letters, because T is a single dash with nothing to anchor it. These are the failures that produce a real word or letter instead of obvious noise.

Error What is sent Reads as
T and A pushed together ... -.- -.-- SKY (K replaces T A)
S and T pushed together ...- .- -.-- VAY (V replaces S T)
Last dash of Y dropped ... - .- -.- STAK (K replaces Y)
Stencil flipped left to right --.- -. - ... QNTS, not a word

The first row is the one to check on a bracelet or a tattoo, because the drift is small: a T followed by a dot-dash only stays a T when the gap before the next letter is visibly wider than the gap inside A. On a strand that is the spacer bead's job; on skin it is the artist's; on the air it is yours.

STAY vs WAIT, STOP and longer messages

Stay and wait are different words with different patterns: STAY begins with S (three dots) and WAIT begins with W (dot-dash-dash). Operators also have a single-character "wait": the prosign AS, sent joined as .-..., which is a pause request rather than the spelled word.

Word Morse Length
STAY ... - .- -.-- 35 units
WAIT .-- .- .. - 29 units
STOP ... - --- .--. 39 units
STAY BACK ... - .- -.-- / -... .- -.-. -.- two words, 7-unit gap at the slash
STAY HERE ... - .- -.-- / .... . .-. . two words, 7-unit gap at the slash

Adding a word never changes STAY itself. The slash marks a seven-unit silence, and everything before it is the same ... - .- -.-- you copy from the top of this page.

For a command sent by light at night, two short words with a long dark gap between them are easier to read than one long one.

STAY as a bracelet or tattoo

On a strand, stay is 13 code beads: 5 round dot beads, 5 long dash beads and 3 spacers between the letters, with no ring because there is no second word. Press Bracelet under "Make it yours" to see the layout, then open the bracelet generator to add a name or date and save the stringing guide.

Slot Letter Beads, in order
1 S dot, dot, dot
— spacer
2 T dash
— spacer
3 A dot, dash
— spacer
4 Y dash, dot, dash, dash

Drawn to Morse proportions, the word is 35 dot-widths end to end, so the dot size you choose sets the length of the tattoo.

Dot width Finished length Fits
1 mm 35 mm inner wrist, behind the ear
1.5 mm 52.5 mm forearm, collarbone
2 mm 70 mm ribs, outer forearm

Export the Tattoo preset as SVG, print it at the final size, and hand the artist the file rather than a photo so the T-to-A gap survives. The tattoo generator adds spine and vertical layouts; type the finished design's dots and dashes into the decoder before the appointment.

Questions people ask

Is "stay" the same in American Morse code?

No. S, T and A match, but American Morse writes Y as .. .. (two dots, a space, two dots), so STAY becomes ... - .- .. .. on a telegraph sounder. Everything on this page uses International Morse, the standard for radio and for every chart you are likely to meet.

How do you say stay in Morse code?

Spell it letter by letter: di-di-dit for S, dah for T, di-dah for A, dah-di-dah-dah for Y. Leave a pause about three times longer between letters than between the signals inside one.

Can I hear stay in Morse code?

Yes. Press Play sound at the top of this page for the 14 WPM version, or save the WAV to keep the clip. Loop plays it again until you stop it.

What does a stay Morse code tattoo mean?

It spells STAY; the meaning is the wearer's. No reliable source we checked assigns the word a fixed symbolism, so this page does not either.

How many beads is "stay" on a Morse code bracelet?

Thirteen: 5 dot beads, 5 dash beads and 3 spacers between the letters. Add plain beads on each side to reach your wrist size, then knot both ends of the word so the code cannot drift.
