Introduction
Hi in Morse code is .... .. (H-I). It has four dots for H, a short letter gap, then two dots for I. That's six dits and no dashes, which makes it one of the shortest words in International Morse code.
The only part people get wrong is the pause between the letters. Below you'll find the timing, how to send hi by sound, light or tap, and what HI means between radio operators.
Letter by letter
H and I, Letter by Letter
Both letters in hi are built only from dots, which is why most learners start here.
| Letter | Morse | Signals | Spoken |
|---|---|---|---|
| H | .... |
4 dots | di-di-di-dit |
| I | .. |
2 dots | di-dit |
| Hi | .... .. |
6 dots, 1 letter gap | di-di-di-dit di-dit |
Morse has no lowercase, so hi, Hi and HI all share one pattern. In writing, a single space separates letters and a slash (/) separates words.
Timing: The Gap That Turns Six Dots Into "Hi"
Six dots sent with no break don't spell hi. The pause after the fourth dot is what splits them into two letters. Morse timing is counted in units, where one unit is the length of a single dot.
| Element | Length |
|---|---|
| Dot (dit) | 1 unit |
| Dash (dah) | 3 units |
| Gap inside a letter | 1 unit |
| Gap between letters | 3 units |
| Gap between words | 7 units |
Under this 1-3-7 rule, hi runs 13 units: 7 for H, 3 for the letter gap and 3 for I. Speed is measured in words per minute (WPM) against the standard word PARIS. At 15 WPM one unit is 80 milliseconds, so hi takes about one second. At a beginner's 5 WPM it stretches to roughly three seconds.
Get the spacing wrong and the listener hears something else. Shift the gap one dot left (... ...) and it reads as S S. Shift it right (..... .) and it becomes the digit 5 followed by E.
How to Send Hi by Sound, Light or Tap
Every method uses the same rhythm: four short signals, a pause about three dots long, then two short signals.
- Say it: speak "di-di-di-dit," pause, then "di-dit." Only the last dot of each letter gets the hard "t."
- Tap it: knock four quick, even taps with a finger or pen, hold still for about three taps' worth of time, then tap twice.
- Flash it: blink a flashlight or phone torch four short times, pause, then flash twice. Keep every flash the same length, because a long one reads as a dash.
- Key it: on a CW radio or practice key, send
.... ..at a steady pitch; 550 Hz is a common default tone. - Check it: send hi into the microphone decoder and see whether it reads back H I. If it shows S S or 5 E, your letter gap is too short or misplaced.
Accuracy comes before speed. Repeat hi slowly until the gap feels automatic; that muscle memory carries over to every longer word.
Hi in Morse Code to Copy and Paste
- Plain periods:
.... .. - Middle dots:

Use the plain text version in a chat, caption or notes app. Because it's only six dots, hi also fits a small bracelet or tattoo design.
Hi vs Hello vs Hey in Morse Code
| Word | Morse | Letters | Signals | Dashes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hi | .... .. |
2 | 6 | 0 |
| Hey | .... . -.-- |
3 | 9 | 3 |
| Hello | .... . .-.. .-.. --- |
5 | 16 | 5 |
All three greetings open with the same four dots, so a listener can't tell which word is coming until the second letter. Hi ends after two more dots. Hello brings in dashes through the double L and the O, which makes it a sensible second word once your spacing holds steady.
Hi How Are You in Morse Code
The phrase hi how are you in Morse code is .... .. / .... --- .-- / .- .-. . / -.-- --- ..- (each slash marks a seven-unit word gap).
| Word | Morse |
|---|---|
| Hi | .... .. |
| How | .... --- .-- |
| Are | .- .-. . |
| You | -.-- --- ..- |
Notice that hi and how share the same opening H. Leave the full seven-unit pause after hi, or the two words blur together. To convert any other phrase, use the Morse code translator.
What HI Means on the Radio
Between amateur radio (ham) operators, HI or HI HI sent mid-conversation is laughter, the Morse version of "haha." An on-air greeting usually uses short abbreviations instead of spelled-out words.
| Code | Morse | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| GM | --. -- |
Good morning |
| GA | --. .- |
Good afternoon |
| GE | --. . |
Good evening |
| CQ | -.-. --.- |
Calling any station |
| 73 | --... ...-- |
Regards, a common sign-off |
| 88 | ---.. ---.. |
Love and kisses |
| AR | .-.-. |

So context decides the meaning: hi tapped to a friend is a greeting, while HI HI from a ham operator after a joke is a laugh.
