Introduction
Happy birthday in Morse code is 13 letters long: 25 dots and 16 dashes, 41 signals in all. The Play button above sends it at 14 words per minute, so the whole message lasts about 12 seconds; the WAV file you download is the same clip. Copy the dots and dashes into a card, flash them when the cake comes out, or save the pattern as an image and text it to the birthday person.
Letter by letter
Three ways to send it
Pick the format by how the person will receive it: by ear, by eye across a room, or on paper they can keep.
| Format | What you do on this page | What they get |
|---|---|---|
| Sound | Press Play to hear it, or open More and press WAV to download the clip | About 12 seconds of beeps at 14 WPM to attach to a text or email |
| Light | Press Flash here, or open the Morse code light page to use your phone's flashlight at a slower 6 WPM | A blinking message they can read from across the room |
| Card | Choose Card under Make it yours, pick the ink color, then press Save image | A PNG of the pattern, 1200 px wide, ready to print or send |
Leave the plain words off the front of a card. Uncheck "Show the words under it" before you save, and a note inside pointing to the Morse decoder lets them work out the message themselves.
Where the slash goes
The slash between HAPPY and BIRTHDAY is not a signal you send; it marks a silence of seven units. Inside a letter the gaps last one unit, between letters three, and between words seven, which is why the pause after HAPPY is the longest silence in the message. At 14 WPM that word gap is about 0.6 seconds, more than twice the 0.26-second gap between letters.
The same rule changes how the message looks in each format. On a card the slash becomes a wider space, in the sound clip it is the long pause in the middle, and on a bracelet it is one ring between the two words. Drop it and a listener hears one 13-letter word.
Adding their name
Most people want "Happy birthday, Sam" rather than the bare phrase. Leave out the comma: the name becomes a third word, so the code gets a second slash and a third seven-unit pause.
- Type "happy birthday" and the name into the Morse code translator.
- Check each letter of the name against the Morse code alphabet; a short name such as Sam adds only three letters.
- Press Play once so you hear all three words separated by the longer pauses.
- Save the image or the WAV and send it.
"Happy birthday Sam" grows to 48 signals and plays in about 14.7 seconds at 14 WPM; "Happy birthday Mom" is also 48 signals but runs about 15.3 seconds, because M and O are all dashes.
Letters people mix up
Two letters in this phrase look alike at a glance: P is .--. and B is -..., both four signals mixing one or two dashes with dots (P is dot-dash-dash-dot, B is dash-dot-dot-dot), and copying P where B belongs turns BIRTHDAY into PIRTHDAY on a card. H is four dots, the most dots of any letter here, while T is a single dash, the fewest signals, so count the dots in both H's before you copy by hand.
The quickest check is to paste your finished pattern into the Morse decoder and confirm it reads back as HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Do this before printing, engraving or inking anything.
Too long for a bracelet?
The full phrase does not fit on a wrist. As a bracelet it needs 41 beads, 25 round for the dots and 16 long for the dashes, plus 11 spacers and 1 ring between the words; with 4 mm beads that strand is about 11.5 inches long, and with 6 mm beads about 17 inches, against a 7-inch bracelet.
If you want jewelry, string just the name or BIRTHDAY on the wrist, or move the whole phrase to a necklace. The Morse code bracelet generator shows the length for any bead size and wrist from 6 to 8 inches, and suggests a longer cord for a necklace.
For a tattoo, 41 signals is long for one line. Choose the Down / spine layout in the image options, or the Tattoo style under Make it yours, to stack the two words, and keep dashes at three times the length of the dots so the pattern stays readable. The Morse code tattoo page exports a stencil at the size you choose.

Questions people ask
How many dots and dashes are in happy birthday in Morse code?
25 dots and 16 dashes, 41 signals across 13 letters. HAPPY has 10 dots and 8 dashes; BIRTHDAY has 15 dots and 8 dashes.
How long does it take to send?
About 12 seconds at 14 WPM, the speed this page plays at. At 20 WPM it takes 8.5 seconds, and at the 6 WPM flashlight speed about 28 seconds, including the seven-unit gap between the words.
How do you say happy birthday in Morse out loud?
Say "di" for a dot and "dah" for a dash, and end a letter's last dot as "dit." H is di-di-di-dit, A is di-dah, P is di-dah-dah-dit, so HAPPY is di-di-di-dit di-dah di-dah-dah-dit di-dah-dah-dit dah-di-dah-dah.
Can I shorten it to HBD?
You can send .... -... -.. for HBD, 11 signals in about 2.5 seconds at 14 WPM, but it is initials, not a Morse abbreviation. Standard CW abbreviation lists do not include a short form for happy birthday, so on a card or gift use the full phrase.
Is this International Morse code?
Yes. The pattern above uses the International Morse alphabet, the same letters a ham radio operator or a Morse decoder app would read, so it will decode correctly anywhere.
Can I send it as a birthday text?
Yes. Paste the dots and dashes as plain text, attach the WAV from the More menu, or send the saved image. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
